The rights and responsibilities of the digital world are not unlike those in the actual society in which we live. They are guided by respect for others and respect for self. But, as in the real world, those who misuse and abuse those rights, who use technology for personal gain without regard for the greater good, pose a threat to what would and could be a peaceful and safe community. Against this threat we must protect ourselves and each other. We must understand our rights – to speak freely, to own intellectual property, to share with and learn from others – and our responsibilities – to behave appropriately and respectfully, to use online materials ethically, and to report abuses, cyberbullying and other inappropriate behavior.
These are the issues surrounding the seventh element of digital citizenship, Digital Rights and Responsibilities. And this is the topic of our Voicethread.
